E-mail from reader Stan Drews:

Dear Colin
I think it is about time you stopped referring to Michael Sim as Scottish.
Apart from many readers finding it more and more annoying, he clearly represents Australia as a golfer.
As much as I would love him to be Scottish as I am more patriotic than most, I know he regards himself as Australian.
If he had wanted to represent Scotland as a professional golfer he would have had the choice when he turned pro - in the same way the likes of Sandy Lyle, Andrew Oldcorn and Scott Drummond, all born in England, elected to represent Scotland.
Stan Drews

Colin Farquharson replies:
Three of my brothers emigrated to Canada in the 1950s. All three considered themselves Scots through and through, though they spent more years in Toronto than they did in their native Aberdeen.
Michael Sim's parents emigrated to Australia in the 1990s but, to the best of my knowledge, that did not change their nationalities. No dispute that Michael was born in Aberdeen. Does moving to another country at the age of seven/eight years, change that?
I don't think so.

E-mail from Peter Norrie:

Colin,
Michael Sim's Australian with a Scottish connection. Whether or not his parents went through the process of changing their nationalities is irrelevant. I'd be willing to bet Michael travels with an Australian passport, therefore he's an Australian.
Regards,
Peter Norrie
PS As an ex-pat myself, currently living in just outside Toronto, I'm a regular visitor to your website and enjoy reading about golf in Scotland - keep up the good work!

E-mail from Alasdair Malcolm:
Colin,
Perhaps we should do what some sections of the media south of the border do with Andy Murray.
If Michael is playing well and winning tournaments, we will claim him as Scottish but if he has a run of missed cuts then he can be Australian!
Regardless of his actual or adopted nationality, it is good to see someone with Scottish roots parforming well on the world stage.
Alasdair Malcolm

Any comments? Does it annoy you that Scottishgolfview is proud of Michael Sim's roots? You can E-mail me at Colin@scottishgolfview.com

New official St Andrews Links website launched

A new official website for St Andrews Links, the Home of Golf has been launched at the world’s largest golf show.
The website, www.standrews.org.uk, provides a full range of information on how to book golf at the seven St Andrews Links courses, including the Old Course, and features a brand new golf shop where users can purchase official Old Course and St Andrews Links merchandise.
An official launch for the website was held at the USPGA Merchandise Show in Orlando , Florida where the site was unveiled by St Andrews Links Trust chief executive Alan McGregor. The website has been live for several days and has received positive feedback from customers.
Visitors to the site can book tee times online, purchase merchandise and arrange golf lessons or custom fit sessions on the website as well as access a wealth of information about the services and facilities at the Links. The new website has a far simpler and flatter navigational structure that leaves users only two or three clicks away from the information they are looking for.
Some fascinating footage from the Open Championships at the Old Course can be viewed on the site along with the TV commercial for St Andrews Links and its global partner Allianz. The Old Course webcam can be viewed on the site and interactive course guides and image galleries are available for each of the courses.
Alan McGregor , chief executive of St Andrews Links Trust, said, “The website is such an important part of our business. It acts as a gateway to the Home of Golf for so many users around the world who are either coming here or who aspire to come here. It has been a major project for us to develop the new site in time for the Open this year and we are pleased to have a new and improved service to offer our golfing customers.
“The new site will be a platform which will enable us to introduce many new innovations in the months and years ahead. It is an indispensable tool for all those who have an interest in playing golf in St Andrews or simply finding out more about the place.”
The previous Links Trust website was developed in 2003 and has grown to some 700 pages. Capitalising on the surge of interest in St Andrews around the 2005 Open it attracted around 80 million hits a year and hundreds of thousands of unique users.
In early 2009, the Trust began working with Broughty Ferry-based Avian Communications to develop a new more dynamic and interactive website which would give it a platform to introduce more fresh content and more innovations.
A key element of the new website is the new Golf Shop section which enables visitors to purchase a full range of official Open 2010, Old Course, St Andrews Links and Castle Course apparel and merchandise.
To access the new official website visit: www.standrews.org.uk.

35% Increase in visits to Scottishgolfview.com last year

Colin and I are very pleased to report that readership of Scottishgolfview.com website grew by 35% in 2009, with 1,257,405 unique visits clocked between January 1 and December 31. This is a 35% increase from 2008.
The site has been averaging well over 100,000 visits per month since May, and even in December, when hardly any golf was played, we had over 117,000 visitors.
We are very grateful for your continued interest in Scottishgolfview.com, Colin is amazing ... he is just SO keen to keep you informed, and he spends hours collecting and collating stories and scores. Thank you to all who have written in and contributed to the website.
You might think that we get paid for providing the service, or that the website is sponsored. WRONG! We knew when we started that we were never going to make a fortune, and we certainly haven't been disappointed on that score. Advertising brings in a little money which does not even cover our costs.
Do you know of anyone who would consider advertising with us? For only £30 per month you can advertise on both scottishgolfview.com and our sister site kirkwoodgolf.co.uk. More information can be found here. I can design an advertisement to fill the 150x300 pixel space for you at no extra charge.

Glover takes three-shot lead into weekend action

SECOND-DAY REPORT FROM THE PGATOUR.COM WEBSITE
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- The flags were surprisingly still, the Pacific Ocean missing the raging whitecaps so typical this time of the year with the trade wind. That was all the evidence U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover needed to realise he'd better keep making birdies.
=================================
Tournament website link:
Complete coverage of the SBS Championship
=================================
Glover had another good stretch in the middle of his round Friday that sent him to an 8-under 65 in the SBS Championship, giving him the lowest 36-hole score at Kapalua in five years and a three-shot lead going into the weekend.
Even at 15-under 131, and in a tropical paradise, this is no time for Glover to relax.
John Rollins had a 66 and was three shots behind, followed by defending champion Geoff Ogilvy (66), Sean O'Hair (67), Matt Kuchar (68) and Martin Laird (68) at 11-under 135.
"I'm pretty aggressive, anyway, so I'm going to have to pick my spots," Glover said. "I'm going to have to make some birdies. These guys are the best players in the world, and they're going to be coming after me."
The conditions have been so pristine over two days along the Maui coastline that everyone in the 28-man field was at par or better. And with the Plantation Course at Kapalua as defenseless as ever, 11 players were tied for the lead at one point early in the second round.
Glover changed that quickly.
He ran off three straight birdies, all of them inside 8 feet, then made a par that felt like a birdie. His tee shot found the bunker at No. 8 and rolled so far back that it was close to the front lip, forcing Glover to stand outside the sand. He blasted out to 12 feet and holed the putt, putting him in a good frame of mind heading to the ninth tee.
Glover hit 3-wood to 12 feet for eagle, then hit a wedge to 4 feet on the 10th for an easy birdie.
Just like that, he was back in control, and Glover made sure he stayed there with a few more birdies late in his round, including a wedge that bounced off the flag at the 16th and settled next to the cup.
O'Hair noticed Glover at 11 under when he walked off the 13th green. The next time he saw a leaderboard along the 17th fairway, he saw Glover at 14 under, and everyone else moving up a couple of notches, too.
"There's quite a few players out there that can win this thing and are playing some nice golf," O'Hair said.
Most of them are being pampered beyond a free room at the Ritz-Carlton, where the butler-drawn baths are among the amenities. Glover was driving along the roads framed by cook pines, gazing at the still Pacific, and knew this week would be a treat for golfers.
"We were talking about this at breakfast," he said. "Nobody who's been to Hawaii has seen it this calm. This is nice for us. We get to be a little more aggressive. Club selection is a lot easier. I wouldn't mind seeing it come up and having some goofy stuff go on, just for fun."
Glover had the lowest 36-hole score at Kapalua since Vijay Singh also was at 131 in 2005. The record was a 17-under 129 by Ernie Els in 2003, when he set a PGA Tour record at 31 under for a 72-hole event.
More wind might make a three-shot lead feel like nothing. Even in peaceful conditions, Glover realises he has a long way to go.
"It'll be hard to catch him if he's playing as well as he is," Ogilvy said. "But he's going to have to keep playing well. In the wind, four or five shots can disappear. But if he's even par on the front nine, three-fourths of that lead could be gone. We all know that if the weather is benign, we have to go low."
Ogilvy played bogey-free and continues to pitch the ball cleanly, which he did last year in winning by six shots. O'Hair made a late push when he saw Glover's score, pounding a 3-wood on the final hole that set up an eagle.
Masters champion Angel Cabrera had another 68 and was five shots behind at 10-under 136, while Open champion Stewart Cink and Kenny Perry were in the group another shot behind.
The other major winner is US PGA Championship title-holder Y E Yang, who was trying to stay in the mix until hitting into the native grass left of the 18th and eventually three-putting from 12 feet for a triple bogey and a 74, leaving him 13 shots behind.
The forecast is for moderate wind the rest of the week, and while a mere breeze if a refreshing change, it's still odd.
"You come over with the mindset the wind is going to howl," Rollins said. "If I'm home watching in on TV, guys' pants are whipping in the wind, they're hitting short clubs from crazy yardages, they're defensive on every shot. To get rounds like this is fantastic."

To be fair, it seems to be raining quite a lot in Florida too ... the LPGA Tour and the US PGA Tour Qualifying Schools have been badly hit by the weather, but I bet their rain is a lot warmer than ours.

Reference our recent mention of Michael Williams
(St Michaels GC, Australia NOT St Michaels GC, Leuchars).

From Keith Hamilton

I actually played with Michael Williams in the last two rounds of the Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle on Sunday. Both Michael and his friend Brett are over from Sydney, Australia for a month and are really enjoying their trip.
They have been staying with a family friend's son in the west end of Glasgow and have been temporary members at Balmore Golf Club as well as playing several tournaments while here.
I believe the last of them is the Sutherland Chalice this weekend before they travel home.
Brett finished 11th at the East of Scotland Open but missed the cut on Saturday and was on the bag on Sunday for Michael who played very solid golf.
Neither Michael or Brett is in the Australian National team but I think they have both won the equivalent of our county championship events. Hope this information is of interest.

E-MAIL LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Colin,
First of all I would like to take time to thank you for the wonderful job you do with the website. It really is required reading for a golf nut like myself and always the first place I go once the computer has started up!
The main reason I am contacting you today is to give you some info which may redress the balance with the US media. At the bottom of the article on Shane Lowry you have an addendum in which you state that the US media are reporting only one amateur winner on the US PGA Tour.
This is wrong. Scott Verplank won the Western Open in 1985 while still an amateur. Doug Sanders also won the Canadian Open as an amateur in 1956. There may be others ( I haven't checked) but these two certainly even things up and protect the integrity of European golf!
Keep up the good work!

Brian Smail
========
Editor's footnote: Below is one of the US-based articles which commented on the lack of amateur winners on the US PGA Tour.
So much about Shane Lowry's victory in the Irish Open was surprising.
The burly, 22-year-old Irishman was only the 16th-ranked amateur in the world, hopeful of making the Walker Cup team, when he teed it up for the first time on the European Tour. His 62 in the third round matched the lowest score ever by an amateur on the tour. His playoff victory moved him up to No. 168 in the world, 14 spots better than Colin Montgomerie.
That Lowry won a European Tour event as an amateur?
Not so surprising.
As much as his victory in the wind and rain on the links of County Louth was cause for celebration, it raised questions about the strength and depth of fields on the European Tour.
Lowry became the third amateur in the last two years to win on the European Tour. He joins Pablo Martin, who won the Portugal Open in 2007 a week before the Masters; and 18-year-old Danny Lee, who captured the Johnnie Walker Classic in Australia three months ago to become Europe's youngest champion in history.
That raises questions when compared with the US PGA Tour, which is going on its 19th consecutive year without an amateur winner.
The last amateur champion in America was Phil Mickelson in 1991.
"On this TOUR, a lot of it has to do with the depth of the fields," said Scott Verplank, who preceded Lefty when he won the 1985 Western Amateur as a junior at Oklahoma State. "Not to take a sideswipe at the European Tour, but I think there's something to that."
Mickelson was a junior at Arizona State when he won the Northern Telecom Open in Tucson, Arizona, making an 8-foot birdie on the final hole for a one-stroke victory over Tom Purtzer and Bob Tway.
It's not so much that Mickelson was the last amateur to win a regular US PGA Tour event. No amateur has even come close since.
A year after Mickelson's feat, David Duval was a 20-year-old junior at Georgia Tech when he had a two-shot lead over Tom Kite going into the final round of the BellSouth Classic in Atlanta. He closed with a 79.
"I was naive and young and didn't know what it was entirely about," Duval recalled. "I just knew I was playing well. I remember that I got asked if I thought I could beat Tom Kite, and I said, 'I don't know. I've beaten him so far.' I got in trouble for that one for being arrogant. But I was beating him. Was that a bad answer?"
Ty Tryon was 16 when he spent more time chasing the leaders than the cut line at the 2001 Honda Classic, eventually tying for 39th. Most recently, Tadd Fujikawa was 16 when he entered the final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii six shots out of the lead and tied for 20th.
The Nationwide Tour has been around 20 years with only one amateur winner -- Daniel Summerhays in 2007.
"There's a lot of good, young kids coming along," Verplank said. "That it happens three times in Europe over the last couple of years, you could construe that as another show of strength of our tournaments compared with everyone else's. But that's nothing against the amateur players. The best amateurs from around the world are as good as the best in the United States."
He certainly had no qualms with whom Lowry beat -- Padraig Harrington, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood were among those who teed it up in the Irish Open, the highest-rated tournament in golf last week.
Likewise, Lee beat a group of players in Australia that included Westwood, Anthony Kim, Camil0 Villegas and Ian Poulter.
Verplank and Mickelson were among the best amateurs when they won as amateurs. Martin and Lee have a similar pedigree.
Martin first showed his stuff at age 17 when he was the 54-hole leader at the Spanish Open. He played at Oklahoma State and was named the top college golfer by winning the Jack Nicklaus Award and Fred Haskins Award.
Lee was born in South Korea and groomed for golf in New Zealand. After supplanting Tiger Woods as the youngest US Amateur champion, he made his PGA TOUR debut in Greensboro and shot four rounds in the 60s to tie for 20th.
Lowry might have been the most unheralded of the three, although he was well-known in European golf circles. The Irishman now has to decide whether to stay amateur and compete at the Walker Cup, or cash in by turning pro.
Verplank and Mickelson both returned to college and won an NCAA title in their senior seasons.
But times have changed. The money wasn't what it is now.
Martin has not had a top 10 since he turned pro and now is No. 527 in the world. Lee has missed four cuts in the six times he has played since winning in Australia.
Perhaps Lowry should consider what Mickelson told The New York Times a few days after he won as an amateur.
"It was unbelievable to me how, as soon as the tournament was over, everybody was hurrying to catch a flight for Hawaii," Mickelson said. "I was so drained and so tired. There was no way I would have been able to play this week. That's why right now I don't feel that I'm ready to turn pro and play every day, week after week."

Slight change to the look of the Scottish Golf View website... I've added a search box in the title banner... hope this makes it easier to find that elusive piece of golf news which you know must be here somewhere!

SORRY FOR SUNDAY BREAKDOWN

Sincere apologies for the complete breakdown of communications on Sunday from the St Rule Trophy and other competitions.
The telephone line I was using at St Andrews was not equal to the task of enabling me to put the scores and other information up on the website.
I will put the St Rule Trophy story I wrote on Sunday evening as well as the scores up on the screen shortly ... plus an edited version of the other tournaments we were unable to report on.
